Matthew 21:1-11

1The King Enters Jerusalem Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-38; John 12:12-19When they came near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples on ahead andZech 14:4; Mark 11:1; Luke 19:29 2said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied up and a colt with it. Untie them, and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and that person will send them at once.”

4Now this happened to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet when he said,

5“Tell the daughter
I.e., people
of Zion,Isa 62:11; Zech 9:9; John 12:15

‘Look, your king is coming to you!
Isa 62:11

He is humble and mounted on a donkey,

even on a colt of a donkey.’”
Zech 9:9

6So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.Mark 11:4 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put their coats on them, and he sat upon them.2Kings 9:13 8Many people in the crowd spread their own coats on the road, while others began cutting down branches from the trees and spreading them on the road.Lev 23:40; John 12:13 9Both the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed him kept shouting,Ps 118:25-26; Matt 23:39

“Hosanna
Hosanna is Heb. for Please save or Praise.
to the Son of David!

How blessed is the one who comes

in the name of the Lord!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Ps 118:25-26; Ps 148:1

10When he came into Jerusalem, the whole city was trembling with excitement. The people
Lit. They
were asking, “Who is this?”Mark 11:15; Luke 19:45; John 2:13, 15

11The crowds kept saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, the man from Nazareth in Galilee.”Matt 2:23; Luke 7:16; John 6:14; 7:40; 9:17

Mark 11:1-11

1The King Enters Jerusalem Matthew 21:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19

When they came near Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus
Lit. he
sent two of his disciples on aheadMatt 21:1; Luke 19:29; John 12:14
2and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you go into it, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever sat on. Untie it, and bring it along. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?,’ say, ‘The Lord needs it,’ and he will send it back here at once.”

4So they went and found the colt outside in the street tied up next to a doorway. While they were untying it, 5some men standing there asked them, “What are you doing untying that colt?” 6The disciples
Lit. They
told them what Jesus had said, and the men
Lit. they
let them go.

7They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their coats upon it, and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their coats on the road, while others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields.Matt 21:8 9Those who went ahead and those who followed him were shouting,Ps 118:26

“Hosanna!
Hosanna is Heb. for Please save or Praise.

How blessed is the one who comes

in the name of the Lord!

10How blessed is the coming kingdomPs 148:1

of our forefather David!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Ps 118:25-26; Ps 148:1

11Then Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple and looked around at everything. Since it was already late, he went out with the twelve to Bethany.Matt 21:12

John 12:12-19

12The King Enters Jerusalem Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40The next day the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem.Matt 21:8; Mark 11:8; Luke 19:35-36 13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting,Ps 118:25-26

“Hosanna!
Hosanna is Heb. for Please save or Praise

How blessed is the one who comes

in the name of the Lord,
Ps 118:25-26
the King of Israel!”

14Then Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written:Matt 21:7

15“Stop being afraid, daughter
I.e. people
of Zion.Zech 9:9

Look, your king is coming,

sitting upon a donkey's colt!”
Zech 9:9

16At first his disciples didn't understand these things. However, when Jesus had been glorified, they remembered that these things had been written about him and that people
Lit. they
had done these things to him.Luke 18:34; John 7:39; 14:26
17So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify to what they had seen.
The Gk. lacks to what they had seen
18This accounts for the crowd going out to meet him, for they had heard that he had performed this sign.John 12:11 19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see, there is nothing you can do. Look, the world has gone after him!”John 11:47-48
